What to Do When Your Business's Entry Door Won't Close Properly
A commercial entry door that drags, won't latch, or doesn't close on its own is a security issue as much as an inconvenience. Here's what's usually going on.
Check the Door Closer
Most commercial doors have a closer arm at the top that controls the closing speed and force. If the door swings shut too fast, too slow, or not at all, the closer's adjustment screws (usually on the side of the unit) may just need tuning.
Check the Hinges
High-traffic commercial doors take a beating. Loose or worn hinges let the door sag over time, which throws off the alignment with the strike plate and keeps it from latching.
Check the Strike Plate Alignment
If the door closes but doesn't latch, the strike plate on the frame may no longer line up with the latch — common after a door has sagged slightly on its hinges.
Check the Weatherstripping
Worn or crushed weatherstripping around the frame can make a properly-latching door feel like it's not closing all the way. It's also costing you on the AC bill if it's a customer-facing entrance.
When to Call a Pro Instead
If the door is an ADA-compliant or fire-rated entrance, or if it's a glass storefront door with a more complex closer system, get it professionally adjusted rather than guessing — those have compliance requirements that a simple DIY tune-up can accidentally violate.
