How to Fix a Leaky Faucet
That drip-drip-drip isn't just annoying — it's wasting water and money. Here's how to track down the cause and fix it yourself.
1. Shut Off the Water
Turn off the shutoff valves under the sink (or the main water supply if there isn't one) before taking anything apart.
2. Open It Up
Remove the handle and pull out the cartridge, valve stem, or ball assembly, depending on your faucet type. Most kitchen and bathroom faucets use one of these three designs.
3. Check the Washer or O-Ring
In most leaky faucets, the rubber washer or O-ring has simply worn out and no longer seals properly. Take the old one to the hardware store to match the exact size — replacements are inexpensive.
4. Reassemble and Test
Put everything back together in reverse order, turn the water back on slowly, and check for leaks at the handle and the spout.
When to Call a Pro Instead
If the leak is coming from inside the wall, under the sink at the supply line connections, or you've replaced the washer and it's still leaking, there's likely a bigger issue with the valve body itself — worth having a professional take a look before it causes water damage.
