How to Mount a TV on Drywall Safely
A wall-mounted TV looks great — as long as it's actually anchored into something that can hold it. Here's how to do it right.
1. Find the Studs
Use a stud finder to locate at least two studs in the mounting area. Drywall alone — even with heavy-duty anchors — is not rated to hold a TV's weight safely long-term.
2. Check the Mount's Weight Rating
Confirm your TV's weight and VESA mounting pattern match what the bracket is rated for. This is printed on the TV mount box and in your TV's manual.
3. Level and Mark
Hold the mounting plate against the wall, use a level to get it straight, and mark your drilling points directly over the studs you located.
4. Drill and Secure
Pre-drill pilot holes into the studs, then bolt the mounting plate on with the hardware provided. Give it a firm tug test before hanging the TV — it should not move at all.
5. Manage the Cables
Run cables down through a cable channel or in-wall cable kit for a clean look, and leave a little slack at the TV end for tilting or adjusting later.
When to Call a Pro Instead
If your studs don't line up where you need the TV to go, if you're mounting on brick or a fireplace, or if you want cables run inside the wall itself (not just hidden in a channel), that's worth having a pro handle — the margin for error with a heavy TV on the wall is not somewhere to guess.
